Commissions Information on the commission process.
Commission Painting I convert and paint models from a range of scales, specialising in the 28mm wargaming figures produced by Privateer Press and Games Workshop. You can find a range of examples on the Gallery page.
Commission work generally needs to be booked at least one month in advance.
The Process Stage 1: Concept. Usually conducted via email, this is the stage where we discuss ideas for colour schemes, conversions etc. If you have a specific look in mind, example pictures (from forums, CoolMiniOrNot, books or magzines) are the most efficient way to show me exactly what you're after.
During this stage, I'll work out an approximate timeline for completing the work. I'll also give you a quote, based on the expected amount of time required. Minor cleanup and assembly (removing mould lines, attaching bases) is included in the basic cost. Assembling more complex figures (fifty-piece plastic tanks, pinning metal joints) will generally cost a little extra, due to the extra time required.
End of Stage 1: Quote sent out for approval.
Stage 2: The models. You can send models to me directly, or you can order from your favourite online store and giving my address for delivery. In Australia, Defiant Gaming and Military Simulations both offer great mailorder services. International stores like Dungeontrader (US), The Warstore (US) and Maelstrom Games (UK) may also be worth trying. However, bear in mind that international post (especially from the USA to Australia) is pricy, so you'll probably want to minimise the number of round-the-world trips your miniatures make.
At this stage, I require a deposit before starting work on the models. For jobs with a total cost below $100, full payment is due at this point; for all other jobs 50% of the total is due here.
Stage 3: Painting. With miniatures in hand, I'll get to work painting them. I usually schedule miniatures in batches, and tend to have several different projects on the go at once - that way, there are never any moments when I'm watching paint dry...
If requested, I can provide photos of the finished models for you to take a look over before the final payment is made. Minor adjustments ("can you paint the gems in green instead of red?") can be made here, but major departures from the original plan ("actually, can you paint the whole thing white instead?") will need to be scheduled as new work.
Once the figures are completed, the remaining balance (50%) is due
Stage 4: Delivery.
All figures will be sent out via Austraia Post's Registered Mail service, with additional insurance (to cover the full value of the figures) taken out where necessary. Figures are packed as securely as possible using PostPack boxes, foam beads and bubble wrap.
Other information
Can I use the models in tournament armies? Absolutely - it's the most common reason for commissioning work. All that I ask is that you don't try to pass off my work as your own, if your event has a "did you paint the army yourself?" criteria.
What about painting contests? This is quite a different issue. Please don't enter the finished models in painting contests.
Do you photograph all commission models? Where possible, yes. Not all models are added to the Gallery, but that's mainly due to lack of time for site updates, and my rather variable camera skills. I keep images of all models for future reference, and may post these on blogs or forums. If you are planning to reveal your new miniatures as a surprise (particularly for tournament armies), let me know and I'll make sure no images go online before your big event.
